PAX West: 2018 Pin Quest
What’s up, gamers?
PAX West, the video game convention that brings tens of thousands of gaming fans to Seattle every summer, officially kicked off today and will run through Monday with a schedule of panels, tournaments, new game demonstrations, video game-inspired musical performances and more.
The event even features its own brand of enamel pins that come with a fun twist. Some can be bought at vendor booths—The Pinny Arcade logo signage designates a booth as being a Pinny Arcade Authorized Pin Dealer–or at the Pinny Arcade store. But many have to be earned, kind of like scout merit badges, by completing specific tasks across the convention floor.
For example, you can earn a pin by playing a specific video game demo, preordering a game, taking a photo in the Star Trek Captain’s Chair at Perfect World Entertainment’s Booth, or completing a round of miniature golf.
Pins are inspired by top video game brands like: Fortnite, Facebook, Oculus, Blizzard, Microsoft, Capcom and Twitch to name a few.
You can read up on the specifics of each quest and pin by visiting the Pinny Arcade website. (Also look for the checklist you can download and use to track your journey.)
There are some rules with buying pins—there are some limited edition pins that have buying limits.
If you can’t seem to accomplish one of the tasks, you can trade with other attendees, PS staff and PAX enforcers. In order to be eligible for trade, your pin must be undamaged and have its pin backs attached. (Keep in mind that all authentic PInny Arcade pins are backstamped with the Pinny Arcade logo.)
To trade, keep a lookout for people wearing an official pin trading lanyard, scan their collection (which will be on the lanyard) and then ask to trade one of your pins for theirs.
“Be sure to respect people’s personal space and collection,” the rules read. “So please don’t touch other people’s pins or lanyards without asking first.”
PA staff and Enforcer trades may only trade 2 pins per person per day. PA Staff and Line Entertainment Enforcers cannot deny a trade.
Penny Arcade pins do retire to make room for new designs, but there is no set “hard time limit” for how their run time will be, the website reads. Each pin will be backstamped with the year the pin was printed.
More than 70,000 people have traditionally attended the event in years past. PAX began in 2004 in Bellevue, Wash., as the Penny Arcade Expo, created by the company behind the Seattle-based Penny Arcade video-game webcomic.
